Dr. Phillips' Lifestyle Prescription for the Year 2011

Select any one (but #1 would be a good choice) of the following ‘Healthy Lifestyle Modifications’ and
implement it during the month of January. Read it as often as necessary to remind yourself to keep
doing it. Each consecutive month add an additional “Healthy Lifestyle Modification.” By the beginning of
2012, you will have gained significant health benefits and enhanced your quality of life.

1. Create realistic and attainable goals. A slow and steady approach to accomplishing your goals is
recommended, so pace yourself.

2. Water is the nectar of life. Drink at least 1.5 litres of purified, mineralized water each day.

3. Work on improving your nutrition by eating at least 2 fruits and 3 vegetables every day. Select
organic, if possible.

4. As there are several toxins in today’s world which accumulate in the human body and can lead
to chronic disease, read product labels more thoroughly. Start with your personal care products,
detergents, and the food you are purchasing. Also, eliminating toxic products that you have
stored in your household is suggested.

5. Increase your daily activity level. Start with an easy stroll/walk of 30 minutes each day. As
the walk becomes easier, gradually increase your walking speed or lengthen the time you are
walking.

6. Hang out with friends that tend to have a positive outlook on life and laugh easily. Being able to
laugh at yourself on occasion can be rejuvenating.

7. Stay balanced. Know when to turn off work and turn on play time. If you can’t seem to find time
for leisure activities, schedule them into your daily routines.

8. Practice non-judgment and be mindful of others. When you catch yourself making a (negative)
judgment (about someone), STOP, take a deep breath and say to yourself, “It is not for me to be
making this judgment.”

9. Dedicate at least 10 minutes a day to relaxing. This may occur by listening to relaxing music,
belly breathing, meditating, praying or any combination of these.

10. Get involved in volunteer activities and/or do spontaneous good deeds for others.

11. Believe in yourself and have more self-compassion. Build and maintain confidence by reassuring
(and even talking to) yourself that, “I am doing the best I can with the ability that I have.”

12. Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. If you have sleep difficulties, seek professional help from your
healthcare practitioner, such as your Naturopathic physician.

Good news: This prescription can be modified and renewed automatically in January 2012.
